Yet Another HPSG-Analysis for Free Relative Clauses in German
نویسنده
چکیده
1The case specification on the gloss of the verb here indicates the verb’s case requirement on the NP realizing as the free relative clause. 2Two cases are defined to match in terms of case form iff either (i) they are identical or (ii) the forms of case-inflecting items of the person and gender in question are identical in both cases. (E.g. nominative and accusative match when the pronoun is in neuter third person singular because neuter third person singular pronouns exhibit the same morphological form in nominative and accusative.)

An HPSG-Analysis for Free Relative Clauses in German
At the moment there is no theory for free relative clauses in German in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994). From GB literature on the subject it is known that free relative clauses behave partly like noun phrases. They can fill argument positions of verbs. And although they are finite sentences, they are serialized like noun phrases in the Germa...
متن کاملAn HPSG Analysis of the Non-Integrated Wh-Relative Clauses in German
In this article, the so-called wh-relative clause construction is investigated. The German wh-relative clauses are syntactically relevant as they show both, root clause and subordinate clause properties. They matter semantically because they are introduced by a wh-anaphor that has to be resolved by an appropriate abstract entity of the matrix clause. Additionally, the wh-relative clause constru...

متن کاملCase Matching in Bavarian Relative Clauses: A declarative, non-derivational Account
Matching effects in German VP coordination and German free relatives, as in (1) and (2), have been discussed for quite some time, going back at least to Groos and van Riemsdijk (1981), as interesting phenomena for linguistic theorizing. More specifically, Ingria (1990) was the first to identify them as potential challenges to constraint-based and unificationbased approaches to syntax such as HP...
متن کاملPhraseological Clauses in Constructional HPSG
In this paper we investigate German idioms which contain phraseologically fixed clauses (PCl). To provide a comprehensive HPSG theory of PCls we extend the idiom theory of Soehn (2006) in such a way that it can distinguish different degrees of regularity in idiomatic expressions. An in-depth analysis of two characteristic PCls shows how our two-dimensional theory of idiomatic expressions can be...
